The Edinburgh Gang at the Pleasance Courtyard, Edinburgh – Callum, Teryn, Jamie and yours truly..!

Hello friend,

Well, ‘The Birth of Frankenstein’ at the Edinburgh Fringe went well, considering only three months before it started, we had just an idea, two scenes from Robert Lloyd George – and no money!Edinburgh is the biggest open Arts Festival in the world and to be honest, it was tiring and stressful to get it all together in time. But, the cast were great – it always makes it worthwhile for me when I see actors shine – and we had some fantastic reviews and feedback, selling out a few times too! And then we performed three nights in my beloved Birmingham. So an intense, but fantastic few months. And thank you SO much if you came to see us.
So to Autumn. (Fall for our American friends!) and we’re still pushing ahead with things.

If you’ve ever wanted to create your own theatre, then look at our next ‘Diploma in Creative Producing For Theatre and Live Events’. It’s an online, live, 12-week part-time (Tuesdays and Thursdays 7-9pm) and starts in November. See http://www.TheatreProducerTraining.com for more details.

Also, after a gap of many years, we’re returning to teaching L.A.M.D.A. exams (The London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art) for people over ten years old. The course starts with a first meeting on Monday 9th October and is for 10 weeks, live in London or online wherever you live. We had a lot of success with this in Birmingham some years ago. (We had a few of our young actors in Harry Potter films) The BIG difference this time, is that we have a new actors agency, MaverickTalent UK, so our learners, if we take them on, might be able to work in professional films, TV, theatre or commercials. If you’d like to know more, please see our website.

Our London Literary Pub Crawl is out every Saturday in Soho, London or ANYTIME if you have a party.
I used to work at Shakespeare’s Globe in London and after the success of my Shakespeare adaptations, I wrote a Shakespeare Tavern Tour for the bard’s 400th birthday. Due to a party of women – from Stratford on Avon actually – last month asking for a Shakespeare tour, we’ve decided to bring it back. At the moment it will go out every Thursday and will be on our website soon at http://www.LondonLiteraryPubCrawl.com

As storytellers and due to the success of the memoir I edited some years ago ‘Confessions of a Butcher Boy’ which has sold around the world and because of my past BBC and commercial radio experience, we’re starting a new offering to help raise funds for Maverick, (which is a registered not-for-profit charity) We’re calling it Maverick Memories and we want to get it live before Christmas so you can gift it to a loved one or parent.
We all know how important our family stories are – so keep them forever with our new service. This is personally very important as my Dad dropped at Arnhem in the Second World War and although he eventually told me his story and I recorded it on a cassette tape (ask your parents!) the tape disappeared and a bit of living history has gone forever.

We’re going to offer three options –
60 minutes of memories… an hour-long interview with the storyteller, recorded and edited and then presented as an MP3 and stored forever on our exclusive website
Music From My Life… an hour-long interview, featuring 5 of the storyteller’s favourite songs.
This is My Life… a book of your memories, written from interviews.
CineMe… an hour-long video interview with the storyteller.

If you’d like to know more, please email memories@mavericktheatre.co.uk

And talking of Christmas (I know) my version of A Christmas Carol with Guy Masterson is touring again from November… including three weeks Off-Broadway in New York! I may HAVE to go and check on my production! Deets at http://www.TheChristmasCarol.co.uk
And I now have nearly 8,000 followers on BohemianBritain.com Thanks so much. It’s a messy collection of allsorts!

Quite a long newsletter. Thanks for sticking with it!

Love and manly hugs,

Last night in Soho..!

Ed, James and Ben calling it a night (and WHAT a night!) on a busy Dean St in Soho. They have all promised to come back and complete the full Pub Crawl. We are always delighted to welcome back our prodigal children.

Bohemian Welsh football!

The face of defeat!

Another reason why I bloody LOVE Wales. The Llanon FC team returns home after only their 3rd game ever… a 4-0 defeat in a cup game to a team playing leagues above them. As you can see… they are despondent!

Art ain’t Easy!

A few reviews!

In #Wales writing a #radio script Last time I was here in May we had an idea and 2 scenes of a play about Frankenstein but no money and no venue. Three months later, this was the result. Anyone who says the arts is easy deserves a slap! 😀

Review – Persuasion – Theatre at the Tabard.

🍷🍷🍷🍷 – 4 glasses of fine claret!

The Theatre at The Tabard continues its reputation for fine acting with its current production, Pursasion. By Jane Austen, adapted for the stage by Dawn Bush.

A loose adaptation of the novel by Jane Austen, it deals with seven years in the life of Anne Elliot; at first a sweet nineteen-year-old persuaded by an influential friend to call off her engagement to the penniless Frederick Wentworth. Seven years later we reencounter the two characters through an unexpected meeting of an unhappy but still sweet Miss Elliot, spinster – and the also unhappy but no longer penniless Captain Wentworth. Along the way, we meet the self-centred Lady Musgrove, Nurse Rooke, Lady Russell, Mary Musgrove, Mrs Croft and the moustached William Elliot. Also Janet Smith, Elizabeth Elliot, Louisa Musgrove, Sir Walter Elliot, Charles Musgrove, Admiral Croft and Captain Benwick.

Sound confusing? Well, it is a little. Some of the original characters from Austen have been culled in this adaptation by Dawn Bush and maybe we could have lost a few more. It means at the start of the production there was a slight lack of clarity – is this a rom or a com? We find out quite soon it’s a romcom. And a rather good one too!

And it’s only a slight blemish on an otherwise clear-skinned, blushing, square-jawed, broad-shouldered production. There are some great comments on male and female roles in society and… well… Persuasions! The young acting cast is universally brilliant and there’s not a weak link. There are some great physical performances and the kiss at the end is worth watching out for! The costumes and set are simple but sumptuous and you shouldn’t need to be persuaded to get down the Tabard before this little gem by touring outfit DOT Productions finishes. Or goes to Bath! (You’ll need to see the show to understand this..!)

Tickets: Performances 14 to 30 September £23.50/£19.50 concessions; Final week £25.50/£21.50 concessions.

The production lasts for 1 hour 45 minutes and has a 20-minute interval.

You can book all productions online on the Tabard Theatre website or call the box office on 020 8995 6035 (leave a message if you can’t get through and your call will be returned).
